TIME-SAVING TIPS
As you work with Scholastic Network, no doubt you'll
develop simple shortcuts and time-saving strategies of your
own. In the meantime, the tips that follow can help you
make the most of your online time.
Read This User╒s Guide
In the beginning, you'll probably spend quite a bit of
your online time exploring the Network. But if you read
this guide first, you will have a better sense of purpose
in your exploration. You'll know what you're looking
for and where to find it--you might even know how to
find it automatically.
Do More Work Off-line
Much of what you'll do on Scholastic Network can be done
off-line, saving you valuable online time.
For instance, if you want to send a message to somebody,
you can open the America Online mail file in your computer
when you're not connected and compose mail. Write and
address your mail, then save it. Later, when you go
online, open the mail folder and send your message.
Another option is to use your word processor to compose the
message, and save it as a text file. Then go to the Mail
menu and select Compose Mail. Address your message and
simply attach the text file to it before you send it on its
way. (See the Attaching Messages to Files section for more
information.)
Let the Computer Work For You
You can save time on the Network by remembering that your
computer can do some of the work for you. Here are two
examples, involving downloading and mail messages.
Download Manager: Let's say that you're planning a current
events project and have noticed that several items listed
in a Library look promising. You don't have time to
download now, so you decide to let the computer do it for
you later, at a more convenient time. It's simple: All
you have to do is highlight the items you'd like to
download, then click on the Download Later button. The
files will be slated automatically for a subsequent
download, scheduled at your convenience. You may decide to
schedule the download for your lunch or prep period, or
for any other time when you'd like the computer to work
for you while you're busy doing something else!
Flash Sessions: You may have a number of messages (with or
without files attached) that you need to send--a perfect
time for a flash session. Simply select Send Later from
the Mail menu. The computer will send all of your messages
at the time you specify, freeing you to move on to other
things.
Make the Home-School Connection Work
Many teachers prefer to take their students' work home
on disc to do the online portion of a project from home,
reserving in-school online time for special events.
If you think that most of your online activity will take
place at home, install the software on your home computer
and log in at school as a guest. This way, you'll be
able to download and use flash session features at home.
Of course, if you only occasionally work from home, you'll
want to install the software on your school computer and
log in as a guest from home. It all depends on your
individual work habits, your instructional objectives,
and your access to the computer.
Make the Most of One Computer
In a one-computer setting, it's helpful to use a projection
device so that an entire group of students can view the
screen at one time. Popular solutions include an LCD panel
that works with an overhead projector and a television
monitor connected to the computer.
Planning is the key to success in the one-computer
classroom. Be sure to allow enough time for students to
work on creating and revising their projects, either by
taking turns, working in small groups, or working at home.
Share Your Account
If your school only has one available phone line, up to
five teachers can still gain access to the Network by
sharing a single account. If you're sharing an account
with other teachers in your school, suggest that each of
you work off-line on individual computers as much as
possible, then stick to a precise schedule for online
project time. In addition, all five of you can schedule
different times for Flash sessions, using your individual
screen names. You'll find that about the only thing you
can't do with a single phone line is have a live chat with
other teachers or students in your school.
